EU moves to tighten waste shipment rules

Exports of plastic waste to countries outside the EU and shipments of waste between EU countries could be banned if national governments decide to follow the European Parliament’s lead.

The EU is moving towards a total ban on the export of plastic waste and much tighter rules generally around the shipping of waste in and outside Europe’s borders. Environmental campaigners say if the rules become law, they would not necessarily cut the amount of waste generated – but could indirectly help the move towards a more circular economy and disincentivise waste creation.
