G7 pledges fossil fuel phase-out, while pressing for short-term supply increase

Energy and environment ministers from the G7 grouping of advanced economies have made new commitments on phasing out coal power and ending international fossil fuel financing, while also grappling with how to ensure global energy security in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Following meetings in Berlin, G7 ministers have outlined their response to what they describe as the “global crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution”. In a joint communiqué published on 27 May, ministers agreed to phase out coal power within domestic energy production, without including a deadline.
