Why biomass has become a burning issue

After Britain’s business secretary commented that imported wood pellets may not be a sustainable energy source – even as the UK continues with its biomass plan – does the fuel still have a place in a net zero strategy?

Last week, confronted by a group of cross-party MPs concerned about the sustainability of biomass as a renewable energy source, UK business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng conceded that importing US-made wood pellets to be burnt for energy is indeed not sustainable and “doesn’t make any sense”.
